
First Aid at Work

The health & Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 require employers to provide adequate and appropriate equipment, facilities and personnel to enable first aid to be given to employees if they become ill or injured at work. These regulations apply to all workplaces including those with 5 or less employees and to the self employed. Employers need to provide first aid care on their premises for staff and have a duty of care towards all visitors and users of their facilities.
3 day HSE FAW (Health and Safety Executive First Aid at Work)
From October 2009, HSE First Aid at Work will be a three day course. First Aid training is required by Law for all companies and businesses.

Course Contents - as per 1 day HSE EFAW above
In addition, attendees will learn how to administer first aid to a casualty with:
Injuries to bones, muscles and joints – this includes spinal injuries.
Chest injuries
Burns and scalds
Eye injuries
Sudden poisoning
Anaphylactic shock
Recognise the presence of major illnesses and provide appropriate first aid including heart attack, stroke, epilepsy, asthma and diabetes)
The First Aid at Work course is interactive, purposeful and will leave you full of confidence about undertaking your role as a First Aider in the Workplace.

2 Day First Aid at Work Refresher Course
For those existing Workplace First Aider who are within 3 years and 30 days of their last certification this 2 Day Course is designed to refresh students with updated knowledge and techniques and to further enhance understanding with the latest best practice.
A shorter course with the emphasis on maintenance of existing critical competencies, this course covers the following key skills and treatment priorities;
The Importance of Personal Safety
Assessing the Scene
Assessing the Casualty or Casualties
The Priorities of Treatment for single and multiple casualties
The use of the Recovery Position
The use of CPR covering proper technique, outcomes and consequences
The Assessment of Bleeding, Burns and Broken Bones
The use of First Aid Kit equipment
Treatment priorities for victims of Choking, Seizures, Diabetes, Anaphylaxis, Asthma, Chest Pains and Head Injuries
This course terminates with students being assessed in both written and practical demonstrations of core competencies.

1 day HSE EFAW (Health and Safety Executive Emergency First Aid at Work)
This course is a lifesaver course and recognised from the 1st October 2009 by the HSE. Minimum of 6 hours of training which leads to a certificate of achievement. Training for the First Aider Low Hazard Workplaces.
The Emergency First Aid at Work course is a new course which will be recognised by the HSE as from Oct 2009. HSE guidelines for First Aid in the Workplace are changing so we have already started to get ready for this. This course is ideal for companies with few employees and / or a low hazard rating according to an assessment of first aid needs.
Course contents:
The role of the First Aider
Cross infection
Recording incidents
The use of available first aid equipment
Assessing scene safety, act promptly and effectively in an emergency
Administer First Aid to the unconscious casualty and one who is in seizure
Administer First Aid to the non-breathing casualty
Administer First Aid to the choking casualty
Administer First Aid to the wounded casualty
Administer First Aid to a casualty in Shock
Administer First Aid to the wounded casualty
Provide First Aid for minor injuries including; small cuts, grazes, bruises, minor burns & scalds & small splinters.
Requalification:
This course is valid for 3 years from the date of satisfactory completion. It is then revalidated by completing the course again. It is highly recommended by the HSE that a Basic Skills Refresher course is completed each year.
